Like most parents the smell of fresh notebook paper and sharpened pencils have filled my home. Many schools across the country have either begun or will in the near future, and that means a change in routine for workouts.
During the months when there was a much looser schedule I was able to run in the neighborhood while the family snoozed or load them up and take advantage of the multiple family options at the local YMCA to keep the teens moving and the little one occupied in the adventure center (think giant indoor playground with supervision). Now that the smallest people need to be ready to walk out the door before 630 -and I still have to be at work- the time for hitting the gym or the road shifts.
Last school year I ran or lifted immediately after the last bus/ drop off or during lunch. This year I have re-kindled a love of Zumba that I hope to fit into my weekly routine (not an instructor or affiliated in any official capacity, just love the workouts.). Just in case you have somehow missed this Latin-dance based fitness program, it is reported to be able to burn 300-400 calories in an hour, putting it on par with jogging at a 12-15 minute mile pace. My actual goal is to work up to the super intense Turbokick class offered locally- not because I necessarily need the 500-800/ hr calorie burn (although that would allow me to cheat day a little harder) but because I did a try one and thought I might have to crawl to the locker room after.
With the life changes I mentioned a few weeks ago I have also aged, giving me some grays and the family bat-wings. Translation, if I’m not careful I might just take flight during a jog. Adding in an arm workout like the one below from Healthline seems great for the gym.
- Pulley triceps extension
- Triceps pushups
- Lat pulldown
- Pilates overhead press
- Lying triceps extensions
- Reverse fly
- Deltoid raise
For days I can’t make it into a machine full gym gethealthyu.com has a pretty good body-weight program that can be done at home, office, or a hotel.
- Chaturanga Push-Up On Knees.
- Triceps Dip
- Triceps Push-Up
- Army Crawl Push-Up
